Anger, tears, withdrawal, worry, or sudden behaviour changes often communicate something a child or teenager cannot yet explain clearly. The goal is not to remove every difficult emotion; it is to help them feel safe enough to understand and manage it.

Connect before you correct

When emotions are high, the thinking part of the brain has less room to work. Start by lowering your voice, reducing demands, and acknowledging what you notice: “This feels really hard right now.” Validation does not mean agreeing with every behaviour. It means showing that the feeling makes sense before setting a calm boundary.

Help them name the experience

Younger children may need simple language such as worried, disappointed, left out, or overwhelmed. Teenagers may prefer space before talking. Offer choices without pressure: talk now, write it down, take a walk, or return to the conversation later. Respectful curiosity is more useful than rapid questioning.

Practical ways to support regulation

Keep routines predictable during stressful periods.

Model slow breathing and calm problem-solving.

Separate the emotion from the behaviour: all feelings are allowed, but not all actions are safe.

Create regular one-to-one time that is not focused on performance.

Notice sleep, appetite, school pressure, friendships, and online stress.

After everyone is calmer, talk briefly about what happened and what might help next time. Avoid long lectures. One small plan—asking for a pause, using a grounding tool, or contacting a trusted adult—is easier to remember.

When extra support is useful

Consider professional support when distress is persistent, affects school or relationships, causes frequent physical complaints, or is accompanied by significant withdrawal, aggression, self-harm concerns, or major changes in sleep and appetite. If there is an immediate safety concern, contact local emergency support.

A child or adolescent psychologist can work with the young person and involve parents appropriately. Wellness Hub can help families find support suited to the child’s age, needs, language, and preferred therapeutic approach.

[1

post-3103","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
